A personal note from the founder of Resona
I grew up playing in local bands. Like so many others, I spent weekends lugging gear into the back room of pubs, setting up on tiny stages and playing to small but passionate crowds. Those venues, the ones that gave us our first shot, are disappearing. Year by year, they have been closing their doors. With everyone that shuts, a part of the music eco system dies with it.
At the same time, I’ve watched some of my favourite artists, incredibly talented, hardworking musicians struggle to make a living. They can rack up tens or hundreds of thousands of streams and still be left with little to show for it.
For many artists from working class backgrounds, the dream just isn’t sustainable. Not because they lack talent, but because the system isn’t built for them to survive. So many promising bands and artists call it a day, not because they want to, but because they can’t afford to keep going.
As a fan, something has been lost too. We used to own music. Hold it in our hands. Read the album notes, admire the artwork, listen all the way through. Undeniably streaming has made it more convenient. I love being able to stream practically anything I want, when I want but I can’t help feeling like it has stripped away the soul.
I’ve felt more disconnected and through many conversations with other music fans, I know that I’m not alone.
I fundamentally disagree with the way current streaming models pay artists.
The pro rata system is broken – it rewards scale, not loyalty, and directs your money to the biggest names even if you don’t listen to them. That just doesn’t sit right with me.
Resona was born out frustration – and this is hope
Hope that we can create something better. A platform that supports the artists we love. That gives fans more for their money, and artists more of what they deserve.
This isn’t just another gimmicky tech app, it’s about restoring value to music, and making sure it’s a viable path for the next generation of artists, whatever their background.
We are not here to compete with the giants
We are here to change the game
If that resonates with you, I’d love to have you on board
